Why North Carolina is different

One of the largest homeschool populations in the country: NC DNPE estimated 165,243 students in 101,880 registered home schools in 2024–25 (data collected July 1, 2024–May 31, 2025, exported May 2025). Checked Oct 18, 2026. Population source.

3rd grade in North Carolina: test this year — the annual nationally standardized test (English grammar, reading, spelling, mathematics) applies every year. If you are starting in 3rd grade, your first test is due within the first 12 months after DNPE acknowledgment, then once in each following 12-month period. Keep the result at least 1 year at your home school. The annual test cost is separate from the curriculum stack totals above (not included).

State money in North Carolina — read this before you budget

ESA+ (Education Student Accounts) is not general homeschool funding: eligibility requires a child with a disability who is eligible for special education, documented by an Eligibility Determination issued by a North Carolina public school within the last 3 years (NCSEAA, checked Oct 18, 2026). Full-time homeschool is an allowed ESA+ enrollment option for eligible students, but homeschooling alone does not make a family eligible. We do not quote an award amount here because amounts and rules change — verify the current amount on NCSEAA before budgeting.

The Opportunity Scholarship is for tuition at an eligible private school, not for homeschool curriculum, so it does not reduce the stack totals above for a typical homeschool family. Checked Oct 18, 2026.

For everyone else, NC DNPE states government does not provide funding for North Carolina home schools and families buy curriculum directly — so the full stack total above is the honest budget. Checked Oct 18, 2026.
