Maryland homeschool checklist

Maryland homeschool checklist (general information, not legal advice)

• Submit your local school system Home Instruction Notification Form, indicating consent to COMAR 13A.10.01 requirements, at least 15 calendar days before home instruction begins, and verify continuation annually with your local system. Checked Oct 19, 2026.
• Compulsory attendance in Maryland is age 5 to under 18, with home instruction as an exception when the child receives regular, thorough instruction in the studies usually taught to children of the same age. Checked Oct 19, 2026.
• Provide regular, thorough instruction in English, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, health and physical education. Checked Oct 19, 2026.
• Maintain a portfolio of materials for each child — instructional and reading materials plus examples of writing, worksheets, workbooks, creative materials and tests — showing regular, thorough instruction across the year. It is reviewed by the local superintendent or designee at the end of each semester, at a mutually agreeable time and place, with no more than three reviews in a school year. No state standardized test is listed in the Maryland home instruction regulation. Checked Oct 19, 2026.
• Alternative route: a home instruction program supervised by an approved nonpublic school or institution (an umbrella, COMAR 13A.10.01.05) is supervised and reviewed by that entity instead of the local system portfolio reviews. Checked Oct 19, 2026.
